Fall has a way of sharpening the senses in France. As the days shorten and the air crispens, diners sit bundled up on café terraces, florist windows fill with dahlias and zinnias, and you can sometimes detect a faint smell of woodsmoke. Markets overflow with seasonal bounty, calling us to gather and reunite with friends as the leaves along the avenues and squares turn to gold and copper.

Set among the rolling hills of Normandy’s picturesque Pays d’Auge, the gardens of the Château de Boutemont are a stunning example of a restoration that pays homage to classical French design. In the Pays de la Loire, we explore the Parc Oriental de Maulévrier, a Japanese-inspired landscape that is particularly atmospheric this time of year.

With this year’s wine harvest in full swing, we take you to Burgundy and the renowned Château de Pommard, where a commitment to biodynamic winemaking dates back generations, while our colleague Olivia Hoffman shares what it’s like to take part in the annual vendanges (harvest). We also dedicate our Discovery Guide to this region, focusing on the charming village of Beaune.

While the orchards are heavy with fruit, we’re inspired to make confiture, and our friend Franck Schmitt has some deliciously creative recipes for jams to make and share. We’re delighted as well by the dishes we found in a new cookbook by the Michelin-starred chef of one of Alsace’s most-loved restaurants.

In Paris, we take a tour of a stunning family villa in the 16th arrondissement, revived to its former glory by Véronique Cotrel and her impeccable team of interior designers. And in the spirit of Toussaint (All Saint’s Day) we take a stroll through Père Lachaise cemetery, one of the city’s most evocative places.
