7 French Scarf Styles for Fall

It’s officially scarf season, and the French are masters of it

A single autumn day in France can start cool, warm up by lunch, and turn chilly again after dark, so the right scarf is an essential at this time of year. Parisians knot them over a trench coat, drape them across the shoulders on a café terrace, and fold them into a handbag when the sun comes out.

We like to switch up styles and materials as the season goes on, starting with silk and light knits and moving toward wool and cashmere to ease into winter. The brands we return to year after year have earned our loyalty with consistent quality, while new patterns and colors keep each season fresh. Here’s a look at the scarves we’re shopping this fall.

Sézane Triangle and Tie Scarves

The triangle scarf and the tie scarf are the latest Parisienne cool-girl styles, and both suit this transitional season. They’re compact rather than chunky, but the knit wool keeps the neck warm. Each one folds small enough to tuck into a handbag for later, when temperatures drop in the evening. Sézane has a range of colors to work with all different outfits.

Longchamp Silk Scarf 90

Silk scarves aren’t just for spring. The 90cm square size is large enough to cover the neck and chest, giving just enough warmth against an autumn breeze without overheating. Silk scarves also double as small works of art, and Longchamp’s intricate prints look as striking knotted at the neck as they do laid flat.

Inoui Cashmere Square Scarf

Like the silk version but warmer, a cashmere square is the scarf for late fall, when temperatures start to dip into winter territory. It’s still lighter than chunky wool and keeps you warm through the first cold snaps. Inoui’s artists draw every design by hand in its French studio, and the France-themed prints make a quality souvenir to bring home from Paris.

Maje Hooded Scarf

Similar to the balaclava hoods we’re seeing everywhere this season, this Maje style goes a step further by combining a scarf, shawl, and hat in one accessory. Wear it open or belted at the waist, with the hood up or down.

Létol Cotton Weave Scarf

Cotton is one of the best materials for fall because it’s soft and warm with less density than wool. The 100% Made-in-Loire brand Létol weaves its patterns into organic cotton instead of printing them on, and we love the quality and designs. For a French look, tie it around the neck or drape it over the shoulders.

Cézembre Wool and Cashmere Scarf

Founded in Saint-Malo in 2023, Cézembre makes its knitwear entirely in France using a seamless 3D knitting process. This scarf is the one we reach for most once the air turns crisp. Made from a blend of 90% wool and 10% cashmere, it comes in solid shades that pair with almost any outfit.

Atelier Fanli Cape

A chic cape works as well for reading by the fire with a copy of My French Country Home Magazine as it does for a dinner with friends. For the MFCH Boutique, we worked with the Parisian Atelier Fanli to create the Emma Cape, a versatile layer for cozy evenings at home or nights out. It’s made from viscose with a cashmere-like feel, it’s easy to care for, and it’s reversible, so each of its three two-tone colorways gives you two looks.
