It’s finally spring here in France, and the air is filled with the fresh aromas of budding leaves and flowers as the country’s gardens burst into life. From rose and geranium filled squares and balcony planters in Paris, to lush country gardens boasting large varieties of plants, from bamboo to iris blooms, the scents of this season are irresistible.

French gardens are renowned for their delicate balance, and capturing their scents to carry throughout the day is an equally nuanced task. Fortunately, the French have long mastered it. Floral, garden-inspired perfumes, such as those with light, fresh and green notes, with a romantic edge, feel particularly suited to this time of year.
From the most established houses to newer names, the range is broad, with each interpreting the spirit of French gardens in their own way. While some lean more classic and composed, others feel lighter and more contemporary. Here are 5 of our current favorites:
1. Fragonard – L’Air de Grasse

Founded in 1926 by entrepreneur Eugène Fuchs, Fragonard helped bring Grasse, the perfume capital of France, to international attention. Today, the house remains family-run, led by his three daughters, who have continued to evolve the brand while preserving its distinctly southern sensibility.
To celebrate the house’s centenary, L’Air de Grasse pays tribute to its birthplace. Softly scented with rose, peony and jasmine, alongside a hint of mandarin, iris and patchouli for lift, it recalls the breezy character of a southern bouquet, distilling the fragrant air of Grasse and the region’s lush, floral landscape into a convenient bottle.
2. Hermès — Un Jardin sur le Toit

A brand that needs no introduction, this light and fresh scent from Hermès opens with crisp notes of apple, pear and magnolia, to evoke an abundant, slightly untamed garden. Airy and gently layered, it leans into a more playful, fruit-laced interpretation of a Parisian green space, inspired by the hidden rooftop garden atop Hermès’ headquarters at 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Conceived by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, its a perfume that evokes a lush, yet secretive feel, like a walled orchard, left to grow on its own terms, brimming with green apples, grasses and light.
3. Trudon — Deux

Trudon is one of France’s oldest maisons, founded in the 17th century and long associated with the royal court. For their scent Deux, they lean into a warmer, more grounded vision of the landscape. Here, the green note feels earthy, and sunlit, rather than brigt and dewy, evoking the woody, resinous character of southern forests, and shaded paths through Mediterranean gardens filled with pine trees and herbs. Complementing the leafy notes are hints of bitter orange and juniper, with a subtle cedarwood and incense finish for warmth.
4. MATIÈRE PREMIÈRE — Neroli Orange

From Matière Première, a contemporary French perfumer defined by its ingredient-led approach, this scent explores orange blossom in its most natural, radiant form. With a focus on freshness, the fleur d’oranger comes through bright, with neroli and bergamot supporting the composition. This lighter floral side is deepened with ylang-ylang and floral musks, resulting in a unique interpretation of a sunbathed orange grove that feels both vivid and gently enveloping.
5. Diptyque Paris – Eau Rose

Last, but certainly not least, for those drawn to the unmatched scent of a French rose garden, Eau Rose by Diptyque is an unusual interpretation of the flower, but an exquisite choice. At its heart are Damascena and Centifolia roses, alongside chamolie, yet rather than leaning into powdery sweetness, the composition stays fresh and a touch herbaceous, sharpened by unexpected accents of lychee and artichoke. Closer to a living spring garden than a traditional rose bouquet its a scent that is joyful and exuberant, lingering softly on the skin like a fresh detour through blooming hedgerows.
